Ace’s All-Boy Nursery

Before Ace was born, I spent some time putting together my little boy’s nursery. I knew I didn’t want it to be over the top with a particular theme, but that my husband would never forgive me if basketball wasn’t somehow incorporated.

As far as style, I wanted it to be masculine, but not too babyish. I wanted him to grow into it and feel like a big kid and in control in the room.

As far as my must haves:

  • His name, large enough for him to see and interact with
  • Bookshelves
  • Mirror
  • A rug for a play area
  • A place to be creative
  • References to Detroit, our hometown
  • References to basketball, per my husband

And here’s how it looks today. Don’t judge me for the eraser marks on the chalkboard or the books askew on the shelf or anything else for that matter. Of course some items have been added as he’s grown older but most of the big stuff has been there from the start.

It’s worked out perfectly. He actively takes books off the shelf to read them or ask us to read them. He recognizes his name on the wall and will willingly spell it for us. He writes on the chalkboard easel all the time and will ask us to write some things for him.

Now that he’ll be moving to the bigger room down the hall, he’s so excited about it . He’s glad to be getting a new bed and the fact that he’ll have his own pillow. He even helped his dad paint the walls.

We’ll move a lot of the stuff from his old room to his new room, but there will still be a few holes to fill. And now I get to do the whole process again for my baby girl Bea. I only have a month or so left. I better get on it.
