A Toddler Bed and Big Boy Room for Ace

With Bea’s arrival quickly approaching, we need to execute on Operation:Get the Kids’ Rooms in Order. Ace is moving to the guest room down the hall which is a little farther from us but larger. Bea will take his old room. One of the biggest question marks I’m running into is whether to get Ace a toddler bed and if so, which one.

The crib he’s in now is convertible to a toddler bed and a day bed. But I think we’ll keep that for Bea to use because we don’t want to end up with two cribs on our hands. So that means we have to get something else for him.

I have seen a lot of examples of beds on the floor, which I actually really like for the practicality. It follows principles of the Montessori method and is nice because it’s at his level so it offers him the control of getting in and out himself. He would even be able to reach to make the bed himself.

There’s also the safety thing. Even without any sort of guardrail, if he happens to roll out of the bed, he wouldn’t have very far to go at all. He’d be fine!

Those are the pros though. The biggest con of a toddler bed on the floor is that it feels incomplete, like an afterthought. My husband and I come from very humble beginnings and it feels good now to be able to buy a proper bed with a frame and a headboard for ourselves and our children.

So as cool as the beds on the floor seem, I think we may go ahead with a regular toddler bed. I could still be convinced otherwise, but I’m pretty sure my husband has made up his mind.

The beds currently in the running are the Ikea Sundvik ($159), Davinci Modena ($99), and the Land of Nod Uptown bed ($299).

Ace is a really small guy, so the length or adjustability of the bed isn’t really a factor. I kind of like the Sundvik and Uptown beds because they don’t have very obvious guard rails. If price were no object, my favorite would the be the Uptown but we still have Bea’s room to put together as well, so that may not be in the budget right now.

I’m open to other options too. I just want something modern looking with clean simple lines that won’t look out of style, but will still be sturdy in a couple years when Bea starts using it.

What do you think? Go with one of these or are there some other good options out there that I’m just not thinking of?
