As I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried to make better food choices to help myself and my family stay healthy. That doesn’t mean I’m perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Let’s keep it real – I love Oreos. Serving size you say? I’ve been known to eat an entire row of Oreos in a single sitting, so don’t talk to me about serving size. Not my proudest moments, but I try not to bring them in the house so it doesn’t happen too often.
Most of the time, I try to be very conscious about what I eat. Here, I list some of the healthier decisions I make on a daily basis.
Meal and Snack Substitutions
Turkey burgers instead of beef burgers – When seasoned correctly ( I like onions and parsley), they don’t have to be bland like most people think of them.
Lettuce instead of a bun for my burgers – Don’t knock it until you try it. I was skeptical at first, but it is actually really good and I’m not stuffed after eating all that bread.
Red bell pepper strips instead of chips with my guacamole – The sweetness of the bell peppers is so good with the guacamole and my mouth doesn’t get all scratched up from the chips.
A salad with all the same fixings instead of tacos – A salad is easier to prepare for a workday lunch and you get way more nutritional value from the lettuce instead of flour or corn taco shells.
Ingredient Substitutions
Whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour
Greek yogurt instead of sour cream
Honey, agave or coconut palm sugar instead of white sugar
Quinoa instead of rice
Ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef
