Cloth Diapers – and Why We Don’t Use Them

Cloth Diapers for Consideration

I love being as natural as possible about my stuff. No chemicals, additives, or extras for me, if I can help it. And I’m all about saving money. So you would think re-usable cloth diapers would be right up my alley. I thought so too.

Back when I was pregnant with my son, I did some early research and decided I was interested enough to try to get my husband on board. He was a tough sell because the idea of reusing something that’d had been smeared with poop grossed him out. I get that. But if plenty of people had gone this route before us, surely they have figured out how to deal with it. It couldn’t be that bad.

So we went to a cloth diapering class at our local natural baby store and learned about all the different types of cloth diapers and how to care for them. After the class, I can’t say he was completely sold, but at least were both better informed.

The Decision to Go Disposable

While we were still making our final decision on whether to use them or not, we kind of had our decision handed to us. We’d had a few disposable newborn diapers on hand to at least get us through our time in the hospital. But then Ace was born 2 weeks early by an unexpected c-section and wasn’t able to latch to breastfeed. You can read about that whole deal back in Part 2 of my Pregnancy and Being a New Mom post.

Basically I became and exclusive pumper and that consumed my days. So while in the midst of trying to get him to latch and trying to keep up with pumping and washing and sanitizing bottles and pump parts, there was no way I could see adding the washing and stuffing and sorting and folding of cloth diapers to the mix. No sir. Not gonna be able to do it.

So we tried a couple different brands of disposable diapers. We tried Seventh Generation, Earth’s Best and we may have even had a pack of Babyganics. They were all fine, but I wasn’t ready to be loyal to any of them. Then we tried Honest. I was hesitant at first because of the subscription model, but now that we use them, I wouldn’t change a thing.

We get the Diapers and Wipe Bundle and we have it delivered every 5-7 weeks depending on how many blowouts we’ve had since the last shipment. The recurring shipping works for us because it prevents us from having to run out to buy more at the last minute. And I love that the diapers are plant-based, chlorine-free and made without additives unlike most national brands. Ace has worn these exclusively since about two months old and he’s never once had a diaper rash. And the prints are so freakin’ cute.

Considering Cloth Again

I wondered to myself if I would consider using cloth for Bea who will be born in a few months. Half of my reason for using cloth though, would be the dollar savings you’d get with using them for multiple children. And at this point, we’d only be using them for her. There’s no plans for other kiddies at this point so the savings thing is kind of out. Between that and the unpredictable nursing situation I ended up in last time, I think we’re going to sit this one out. Cloth diapering might be perfect for some people, but it’s just not in the cards for us.
