You guys. Baby names are being pulled from Instagram filters now. I like Instagram as much as the next person but this seems like a bit of a stretch.
Call me old-fashioned but I like a name with a bit of history, deeper meaning, or heritage to it.
When it came to naming both of our children, we’d already had baby names picked out long before they were even a twinkle in our eyes.
My son was named after my husband, and his father, and his father so he is the fourth generation. While I don’t think it’s a name either of us would’ve have picked out of the clear blue sky, it’s a good strong name that will serve him well as he gets older. My husband loves having a son named after him and in a way I think it gives my son something to hang his hat on. Not many people can say they are the IV.
My daughter’s name was also pre-determined long ago. When I was born, my father wanted to name me one thing and my mother wanted to name me after her. My mother won. So she and I have the same first name and same initials. But here’s the kicker: My dad’s side of the family and even my mom have always called me by that name my dad originally wanted. So now, I will do my dad a solid and officially pass that name on to our daughter. He couldn’t be happier about it and neither could I. I’ve always loved the name and hopefully she will too.
Her middle name is also a family name. It was the first name of my great-grandmother and it sounds every bit of it. It’s the type of classical name that immediately identifies itself as being generational and proud of it in every way.
Maybe these Instagram naming mamas are on to something and I’m just being a stick in the mud. But as for me and mine, we’ll stick to the tried and true.
What about you? What has been the inspiration for your baby names?
I have a third. I didn’t necessarily want one at first. But third means he’s a Trey, and Trey rhymes with Rae, so seven years later I’m pretty comfortable. It’s cute.
Trey is perfect for the third. Especially because of the rhyming 😉
